Mathmos Editions Lava Lamp, with Oak pattern base and dark blue lava in clear liquid is Mathmos limited edition model, and is available for limited time. Editions is equivalent with Mathmos Astro, wich was THE lava lamp that started the whole lava lamp scene.

Lava lamps need little introduction: It is a capped glass bottle that has a light bulb on the bottom and a steel stand below. Using mains current, the bottle is heated up, and the oil inside springs to life and begins a mesmerizing dance.

The whole lava lamp boom started in UK when the inventor of the device, Edward Craven-Walker walked into a pub and saw a weird device behind the counter. It was a glass coctail mixer that had a strange blob of fat floating in the liquid inside. The bartender told him that it was his egg timer - when the fat had melted and rose on the surface, the eggs were ready.

Edward had the idea that by using a thicker oil and placing a lamp underneath, the machine could be commercial success. The rest is history.
