Product info

Drawing straight lines in school must be a memory shared by us all - And most of us probably figured out that with a ruler and the desk you can make all kinds of buzzing sounds of different pitches. This ruler is designed precisely for buzzing!

Yes yes, finally the Musical Ruler is a reality: This ruler is mainly design to create different sounds with the buzzing technique. The idea is, that the ruler has the notes c-d-e-f-g-a-b-c marked on certain intervals. Once the other end of the ruler is laying outside of the table and the other on the table, it makes a sound of a given pitch when bent against the edge of the table and released. While oscillating up and down the ruler buzzes or resonates.

In plain English: When most of the ruler is over the edge, it resonates slowly and makes a low pitch sound. When pulled so that more of the ruler is on the table, the distance the other end travels up and down is very short and the movement is quick. This results in a higher pitch buzz.

This is as user friendly as musical instruments get. Beware though, other people will probably get annoyed by your new musical hobby - but in your defence you can always say that you're just trying to build a new career, while trying and failing to play Smoke on the Water, for the third straight hour.

Included is also a guide for playing with the ruler (in English). With the help of the guide you'll learn the basics of ruler playing and get tips for solos, rock'n'roll, folk music, jazz, and special effects. We're just waiting for the first Finnish band to give one to their lead singer and add some variety to their awesome riffs.

It goes without saying that it can also be used for drawing straight lines. We tried drawing straight lines with a piano and noticed that it's too big for desktop use. The tuba had a better size, but had no straight angles on it. The flute kept falling off the desk once you laid it down. Only the Musical Ruler can both draw lines and play music!
