Sumatra Gayo Mountain comes from the Ache province on the most northern tip of Sumatra. All the coffee is grown without chemicals and up to a altitude of 2000 meters above sea level.

After harvest of the mature berries the fruit pulp is peeled away. This is done directly by the farmer on home-made machines often consisting of pieces of metal driven by recycled bicycle parts. Following this is a overnight fermentation in woven plastic bags before the beans are taken out to dry in the sun.

This process yields a coffe that combines the best of a washed Gayo-coffee and a traditional Sumatra Lintung or Mandheling. It produces a coffee with a character that goes from grassy to spicy but always soft and full. The body of this coffee is BIG and that is what gives Gayo (or Acehkaffe) its unique status on the world market.

This perticular coffee is from the Permata Gayo co-op. Currently the cooperative has 394 members with a further 567 whanting to join. Started in 2005 with 50 members after the return of many coffee farmers which had left during the civil war. 2007 the co-op recived their organic certifications and Faritrade followed in 2008. The total area of double certified coffee is about 700 hectare.

Suitable for regular coffee machine with drip cone filter and for Espresso. Please note, these come to you as beans. You'll need to grind them to your liking.
